The best times to plant your cedars
Do you want to plant a cedar hedge and are you wondering when would be the best time?
First of all, remember that it is possible to plant throughout the season, from April to October; in other words, as long as the soil is in good working condition. However, some periods are more favorable for planting than others.
SPRING
Spring is certainly the best time for new plantings: it is the growing season par excellence in the entire nature. It is recommended to plant when the weather is still cool and the soil moist, and before the hot weather sets in.
FALL
Planting in the fall has the advantage of promoting rooting. Plants established in the fall take root particularly well and start to grow quickly the following spring. In addition, as for a planting in spring, the cool weather and the humid soil help the trees to recover well.
SUMMER
Summer is also good for planting new cedars, although it is still best to avoid very hot days. However, if you plant when the heat is strong, plant preferably early in the morning, or late at the end of the day.
At all times, pay attention to the following points:
- Take the cedar out of its container just before planting it to avoid exposing its roots to the sun;
- Provide a hose to water the trench abundantly before and after planting, as well as the root balls before removing them from the pots;
- Tamp the soil well around the roots to prevent the formation of air pockets in the soil and therefore possible drying of the roots.
